THE RASSENDYLL WITH A WORD ON THE ELPHBERG
In this beginning chapter we are introduced with three characters i.e. Rudolf Rassendyll, Robert (his brother and Rose (his sister-in-law). From the beginning Rassendyll is insisted to join any profession but he denies saying that,
“My position is a comfortable one; I have an income nearly sufficient for my wants. I enjoy an enviable social position.”
Rudolf Rassendyll’s hair is like the hair of Elphberg family and he feels proud to be called an Elphberg as he says,
“I rather like being all Elphberg myself.”
He is fond of traveling and being a member of aristocrat family, he feels proud. He is age the age of twenty-nine but being a member of high class family he does not join any profession. His sister-in-law, Rose however reminds him to do a business or a job. He is offered to be an attaché to sir Jacob as his country opens an embassy and in this way he can complete his desire of traveling. Though he is not interested to go with sir Jacob but due to his sister-in-law and his eagerness of traveling he agrees. He comes to know that through newspaper Times that the coronation ceremony of Rudolf fifth will take place very soon in Strelsau, Ruritania. He decides to join the coronation ceremony. He says to his sister-in-law that he has intended to study the political and social problems of the interesting community dwells in that neighbourhood and assures her to write a book.

Q1. Why does Rudolf Rassendyll not join any Profession?
Ans. Rudolf Rassendyll belongs to an aristocrat family. He is the brother of Lord Burlesdon and has got the title of Lord and much property in inherence. His ancestors were the Count of England, so even at the age of twenty-nine he does not engage himself in any profession.
Q2. What qualities does Rudolf Rassendyll have?
Ans. He is educated in German School, can speak German, English and French languages easily. He is a good swordsman, marksman and a good rider. He is fond of traveling, adventures and has a cool behaviour.
Q3. Why does Rudolf Rassendyll agree to go with sir Jacob as his attaché?
Ans. Rudolf Rassendyll is fond of traveling and adventures and he has to agree in front of his sister-in-law to make her happy. This was not a difficult job for Rudolf as there is no legal responsibility in this job so he agrees to be an attaché to sir Jacob.
