  1. Who was Mathilde? To whom was she married?

Ans. Mathilde was a pretty, charming, middle-class girl. She was married to Loisel, a clerk, who worked in the Ministry of Education.  

  1. What was she dreamt of?

Ans. She always dreamed about being rich. She was unhappy because she couldn’t afford fine clothes and couldn’t attend grand parties given and attended by the elite of the city. She always dreamt of owning a large collection of fancy clothes and expensive jewellery.

  1. Why did her husband give her?

Ans. Her husband gave her an invitation one evening. This invitation was a gift for her according to her husband as it was the invitation of a grand party and she wanted to attend grand parties.

  1. What did her husband say about the invitation?

Ans. When her husband gave the invitation of grand party to her, he said, “Everybody wants to go, but few clerks can. The most important people will be there.”

  1. Why was she upset after the invitation?

Ans. She was very upset after getting the invitation as she thought that she had no valuable outfit to wear in the party. So she insisted her husband to buy some precious outfit for her for the party.

  1. What was the cost of her outfit?

Ans. She had no precious outfit to wear in the party so she was agreed to buy new outfit but she was not cleared about the price of her new outfit as she says, “I am not exactly sure, may be I could manage with four hundred francs.”

  1. Why was she embarrassed?

Ans. Though she had got some francs from her husband for her new outfit but she was still embarrassed about her jewellery. She thought that she had no precious jewellery to wear in the grand party. So she was embarrassed.

  1. What jewellery did she wear in the party and how did she get it?

Ans. As she was a middle-class girl so she had no any precious jewellery to wear in the party. But she wore a diamond necklace in the grand party which she borrowed from her friend.

  1. How was the grand party?

Ans. The grand party was wonderful for her as she was locking prettiest one in the party. She was stylish, warm, smiling and very happy. She danced joyfully and had a wonderful time in the party.

  1. How did Loisel collect the required money?

Ans. Loisel had eighteen thousand francs he had inherited from his father. He borrowed the rest. He got a thousand francs from one, four hundred from another— a hundred here, sixty there. He borrowed the rest of the money from moneylenders on very high interest.

  1. How did they pay their debt back?

Ans. They suffered a lot. She cooked and did housework on her own. She scrubbed the laundry, took out the garbage, carried up water, and dressed like a peasant while her husband worked evening as a bookkeeper, and at night he copied documents for five sous a page.

  1. How was Forestier met her and what did she tell her about the necklace?

Ans. One Sunday she went for a walk and met Forestier while strolling with a child. When Mathilde told her the story of the necklace, Forestier told her that the necklace was fake and artificial.

  1. Why did M. Loisel expect his wife to be pleased to receive the invitation?

Ans. M. Loisel expected his wife to be pleased to receive the invitation as she always dreamt of becoming rich and mix with rich people. She wanted to attend the grand parties and wanted to wear expensive outfit and jewellery.

  1. What was Mathilde’s reaction on reading the invitation?

Ans. When she read the invitation of the grand party she became angry with her husband saying that she had no any expensive dress and jewellery to wear in the party. She says,” I don’t have any party dress so I can’t go to that party.”
