THE FORCING OF THE TRAP
Rassendyll waits for some time at the same place and hears De Mauban’s shriek and calling Michael for help.
“Help, Help! Michael, help!”
Rupert enters in the room. Rassendyll gets up on the gateway of the old castle, by the entrance from the drawbridge and sees Michael and his servants rush towards De Mauban’s room, where Rupert savagely fights them all with his sword. He wounds Michael and Johann comes to help him with his servants but Rupert shows his efficiency in jumps into the moat. De Gautet looks out of the gateway to investigate the uproar across the water. Rassendyll, who takes his keys and makes his way to the outer of the room by the king’s cell where Bersonin and Detchard are on guard, stabs him to death. Rassendyll opens the door of kings cellar and goes in. The noise of the affray makes them unbolt their door so Rassendyll is able to burst in. He kills Bersonin with his sword but Detchard rushes to the king’s room to carry out Michael’s orders for such a crises. The doctor heroically struggles but is killed. Rassendyll fights with Detchard, proves a good swordsman and kills him. In fighting real king sees Rassendyll and says,
“It’s my cousin Rudolf! Cousin Rudolf! I’ll help you, Cousin Rudolf!”
Rassendyll examines the unconscious king; he hears the sound of the drawbridge being pulled over the moat and has to rush back to the gateway. He hears to Rupert saying,
“Well, the bridge is there! Come over it! And in God’s name let’s see Black Michael keep back you curs! Michael, come and fight for her!”
